How Deplavity Was Born (and Everything We Made Because of It)

Hi, I’m Mike. I co-host the Explicit Measures podcast with Tommy Puglia here at PowerBI.tips. And I would like to formally apologize to the English language, because on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, I invented a word by accident, live, on air. That word is Deplavity.

This post explains the joke, shows you exactly where it happened, and rounds up every single thing we’ve made because of it. Videos, the ad, the jingle, all of it. Grab a coffee. Take it once daily.

The slip

We were recording episode 573, Fabric Deployment Plan. Tommy and I were digging into the new deployment plan feature in Microsoft Fabric, and I was making a perfectly reasonable point about how people coming from the Power BI world are getting more comfortable with deployments. I was trying to say “deployment savvy.”

My mouth had other plans. Two words went in, one word came out. Here’s how I explained myself right after:

“Deployment savvy was what I meant to say. Like two words instead of just one.”

Me, Explicit Measures episode 573, trying to recover

Too late. Tommy immediately told me I had to trademark it before Microsoft took it, and he had a theory about why:

“They love nothing more than taking two giant words and just compound making a really bad name for the new product.”

Tommy, Explicit Measures episode 573

Honestly? Fair. And that’s the heart of the joke. Deplavity sounds exactly like something that could show up in a product announcement. It also sounds exactly like something you’d hear at the end of a TV commercial, right before a very calm voice reads you forty side effects.

Here’s the moment it happened:

Then it became a prescription drug

By the end of the episode, the word had already grown legs. I have to give credit to John for this one, because the idea that Deplavity sounds like a prescription drug was his. As I put it on the show:

“Deplavity sounds like a prescription drug to solve your deployment fabric artifacts.”

So of course I read Tommy a full pharma ad, live, side effects and all. “Ask your capacity admin about deplavity.” Not approved for Premium Per User. Then we wrapped the show with Deplavity as our sponsor. Our first sponsor ever, and it doesn’t exist. That feels right for us.

If you have ever deployed a semantic model to Prod and watched it keep pointing at Dev, you already understand why this landed. Deplavity is a love letter to every Fabric and Power BI person fighting Chronic Deployment Dysfunction and Artifact Drift. It’s a joke because it’s true.

The official promo

So we made a commercial. Obviously. Watch it once daily, or as directed by your admin.

Hear the full ad

The full narrator read, about 1:25, from “Do you suffer from Chronic Deployment Dysfunction?” all the way to “Ask your admin if Deplavity is right for your tenant.”

Download the ad (MP3)

The jingle

Riffy wrote the official Deplavity theme song, “Deplavity Ad,” made with Suno. Side effects may include humming it during standup.

Download the jingle (MP3) or listen on Suno.

Everything we made

Here’s the full kit, in one place, so you can share it with that one coworker who deploys straight to Prod.

Want the real stuff?

If you came here for actual Fabric deployment content, I’ve got you. The episode 573 post has the full rundown of what Tommy and I covered on Fabric deployment plans, plus the complete transcript, Deplavity moment included. You can find every episode of Explicit Measures at powerbi.tips/podcast and on the Power BI Tips YouTube channel.

And if anyone at Microsoft is reading this: Tommy says you’ll try to take it. Please don’t. Or at least send us a T-shirt.

Ask your admin if Deplavity is right for your tenant.

Mike

Fabric Deployment Plan - Ep.573

Fabric deployment plans let you order deployments and run notebooks or pipelines before and after each item lands, which finally gives data a place in the release. Mike Carlo and Tommy Puglia work out which teams should reach for a plan, which should stay in Git and GitHub Actions, and why both would wait for GA.

Ontology Agent - Ep.572

The Fabric IQ ontology agent can draft an ontology from a lakehouse, and it still cannot finish the job it just offered to do. Tommy Puglia and Mike Carlo hold the preview out of any workspace a client depends on.

Fabric Notebook Toolkit - Ep.571

Microsoft's Fabric Notebook Toolkit lets an agent you already pay for drive notebooks from a CLI. Tommy Puglia and Mike Carlo treat the preview as a tool to learn, not a pattern to hand to every workspace.
